From the Master of Ballet/Ballerina painting, Edgar Degas….Waiting….c. 1882….fabuloso, fabulique!! (one of those must be French?)….According to the ever-insightful Good Book: “A young ballet dancer bends forward to massage her foot, while her somberly dressed older companion sits silently beside her on a bench. They appear to be waiting, perhaps for an audition or its outcome. The two figures are a study in contrasts: The athletic dancer dressed in a dazzling costume reflects the glamour and artifice of the stage, while the shabbily dressed, bent figure represents the drabness of everyday life.

From the 1860s onward, Degas frequented the Paris Op©ra, where he made numerous studies of performances, rehearsals, and backstage scenes. Later, he would refine and combine these motifs in his studio, in exercises of daring technical skill and compelling psychological subtlety. Here he demonstrated his complete mastery of the pastel technique. Delicately blended strokes are combined with bold hatching and emphatic slashes; pink, blue, and creamy tones describe the dancer in contrast to the dark, severe form of the older woman”…..That about tells you everything you’d possibly want to know about this photograph of a great painting…Actually seeing the Great Painting would, of course, provide you with the information you really want to know about the Great Painting…or so it would seem.

My officemate, Raoul Schiedlicker, is going as to the office Halloween party with me….He costumed himself up to look like this!….I asked him who he was supposed to be and all he said was “Well, I ain’t Ernest Borgnine!”….So I told him he couldn’t go with me because I wasn’t going to be seen at a Halloween party with anyone who WASN’T Ernest Borgnine!!!…Now he’s really confused and not sure if I really want him to go with me or not….What a maroon!!…But that WAS pretty unkind of me, I guess….and unkind to Ernest Borgnine!

For this year’s office Halloween Party over at the Ballside Ballroom (how inventive??) in Bagley’s Bay I decided to costume myself up to look like one of my favorite actresses, Charlize Theron….I don’t think I did too badly, do you??…I was going to costume myself up like Charlize in that one movie where she’s the horrible-scary serial murderess, but I found that I didn’t have to do much costuming up at all to be looking horrible-scary (I like to feel as if I really WORKED my costuming before I sally forth to a Halloween party or similar costumed activity—I’d mention some of my other similar costumed activities, but I want you to keep your high opinion of me)….Anyway, being that I’m a guy and all, I’m a bit freaked that some of the lecherous loonies in the office will try to hit on me….so I’m taking along an industrial-sized can of mace and an industrial-sized toy taser I found at the Wal-mart Superstore in the Christmas Toys aisle….And I’m drenching my body in some really odorific, foul-smelling, rancid Old Spice Lime Aftershave I got for Christmas when I graduated from 8th Grade….That should keep the varmints at bay!!…..A-rooooooooooooooo!!

In College: The morning after we were sniffing Pure Oxygen in the Chem Lab and my deceased friend (deceased since then) Raychuck flicked on his Zippo to check the time….Quelle Disastre…We honored the vaporized (well, kind of) Raychuck that morning by mounting the remains of the world’s largest Chem-Physics-Engineering Complex in the World and downing a six-pack (each) of Pabst Blue Ribbon (well, Gary had to have a sixer of Schultz “beer” since he lost all but a buck ninety of his moolah in the Quelle Disastre)….Really, quelle disastre!!
