Remembrance of Things Past….that should be in the forefront of the American Conscience everyday until it is “fixed” (and I’m not talking about the elections, here)….a great photographic journal of the aftermath of Katrina by Robert Polidori. One of the most shameful chapters in American History, and a chapter without an ending…….If America has a whole is still capable of feeling shame (and I think America is a spectacular country when it gives itself a chance), we should all feel the greatest shame about what was done here and what is not being done now. Many have said it is beneath us to act this way (then and now), but there is nothing to indicate that it truly IS beneath us….we have forgotten about this and swept it under the mat of politics, greed, and self-interest. Another cliche: We ARE better than this! And indeed we are.

My Office Holiday Party, c. 1956. Well, it’s really my party from THIS year…the people in my office still dress like the 50’s because they still THINK like the 50’s (post-McCarthy, pre-Kennedy I guess). The Office Party is always just super because it starts at like 1145 a.m. and is over at 1…p.m., not a.m……so we all just slump over our desks and catch some zzzzzzzz’s in the p.m….till 5….turn off our computers and everything phoney goes to voicemail….keeps our annual OWI’s-after-work count to a minimum….have a large tally board in the front office and we haven’t recorded an OWI-after-work since that Office Party that started at 430 p.m. back in ’97….big sudden snow storm and the booze and Cheetoh truck didn’t make it till then….party still had to end at 5 p.m…..that’s when the daily office clean-up crew invades the office with their big honkin’ floor buffers…and they ain’t gonna stop for no friggin’ white collar Holiday party…not at $5.50 an hour (if you don’t have a family, the office only pays you $3.75, which, according to recent governmental studies, is sufficient, based on an 90-hour week, to house, feed, and clothe 1/5th of a human being for half a day a month……around the white collar office, we think that’s more than sufficient, along with their annual Holiday Bonus of a $2 gift certificate at Macy’s!! Splendid photos at this site by Ian MacEachern.

Very funny and perceptive. I wonder if China (as a country, not just the Chinese elite, who already feel this way) will have this same attitude towards itself in say 5 to 10 years? America’s great strength was, once upon a time in the not tooooooo distant past, that it viewed itself, in general terms, as a unique, always forward-looking, vibrant, postive force for change, unsaddled by the lessons and burdens of a long history, etc. Not so much anymore…the vast majority of Americans (the invisible people not given a voice in mainstream media or politics or the economy or…) are beginning to feel more the victim than the hope…and that’s a very, very bad sign for the future of the United States…it’s a cliche, but all of the great empires in world history have had their rise and had their fall…there are reasons for that (hubris, arrogance, greed, and forgetting about the hopes and dreams of 90% of the population, amongst others). Anyway, lots of great and funny things on this site.

In this version of “Little Red Riding Hot…I mean, Hood,” Red is apparently not so upset that the Big (really Big) Bad (smokin’ Bad) Wolf at Granny. After happening upon the Wolf in Grandma’s PJ’s and commenting on how BIG he was (really, really BIG), Red forgets all about Grandmother, hops on Wolfie’s Hog, and they both head for Vegas to share her picnic lunch at Caesar’s Palace (where they get comped for their neat costumes…and the fact that they blow all of Granny’s retirement nest on craps! A lot going on here! Apparently. Awesome new takes on our favorite fairy tales at this site.

Photoshopped work of great art, I think. Exciting use of colors and the impressonistic water reflections of the ships are dazzling. Photo by Kevin Kroeker. Many other unique photos at this site.

Recently remodeled the house from Hitchcock’s “Psycho”…looks pretty nice…Mom is still in the basement in her rocking chair, but even she’s looking better after the remodeling…they re-varnished her chair and put a new cashmere sweater around her…I told them it was a waste of money to put cashmere on a skeleton, but the remodeler had a huge kitchen knife so I wasn’t about to argue with him!

This is where they filmed the movie “Green Mansions”—or was it “Green Acres”?—think I can see Eb and Mr. Haney doing something unnatural in the fourth window from the left (top row), but maybe it’s just my creativity (perversity?) run amok again. Anyway, if you like green (as I do–my Irish side) and you like castles, this is your kind of photo!
